Mirrors are not what they have been!

Everything you need to know to look good after the 40’s!

Your mirror image has a dramatic effect on the way you feel and the way you feel dictates your actions and your actions create the results you get in life. And we all know too well that the way we look affects the way the world looks at us.

The image most women look at, study and criticise most is their face. You know what I’m talking about; it’s the dark lines under the eyes the bags or sagging eyelids, the wrinkles, the spots, the red blotches or brown pigmentation, etc. You see all the details and even if there is just one tiny spot the day will be off to a bad start. Hey, we can even accept the extra pounds just as long as the face is perfect.

Your face reflects what’s going on inside the body, your skin being an image of your health.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine the face reflects the condition of various organs and a talented practitioner will look at your face and tongue and tell you what is going on in your body.

Fx:

  • around and between the eyes tells about the kidney, liver or spleen
  • around the mouth tells about the spleen and pancreas
  • brown or red pigmentation tells about the liver
  • the complexion tells about lung or heart
  • double chins tells about the spleen and pancreas

Great skin after 40

For great skin at any age the recipe is simple: “time (healing/reparation time) and nutrients” and as we age we need more of both.

Skin time

The anabolic hormones, DHEA, testosterone, progesterone and Human Growth Hormone control healing, repair and strength and these hormones only work when we are resting. As we age our production of these hormones drops and longer rest periods are necessary.

Make sure you are getting your 8 hours every night and be strict about regular breaks throughout the day, even the odd power nap and note the changes in your skin and complexion.

Skin food

When I think of skin nutrients the first thing that comes to mind is the colour green. Green, especially bitter tasting foods are elixir for your liver and your liver pretty much dictates the quality of your skin.

Try starting your day with a green smoothie and watch your skin glow.

Fx:

Put the following ingredients in a blender:

  • 1 cup of raw broccoli
  • 1 cup of raw baby spinach leaves
  • 1 cup of cucumber
  • ½ avocado
  • 1 cored pear (not peeled)
  • 1 lemon peeled and piped
  • 2 – 4 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
  • ½ cover with filtered, ionized water
  • blend for 2 – 3 minutes until the mixture is creamy

Try drinking this every morning for 14 days and you will see a difference in the texture and colour of your skin. Keep it up and the difference will be permanent.

Skin strength

The strength of your skin (muscles and bones) is all about the proteins collagen and elastin. A diet rich in amino acids lysine, glycine and proline, is the key for sagging cheeks and chins. Not to mention vitamin C oh so essential for the formation of collagen and elastin.

So ladies make sure you’re getting a good animal source of protein, at least 50 grams of protein each day. Some of you may even benefit from a protein supplement, just make sure its not full of sugars and other preservatives.

Free Radical attack

If there is one process that ages the skin more than any other it’s oxidation, and the molecules responsible for this are the so-called free radicals. Free radicals have lost a “part”, and attack other molecules to get a “spare part”, thus disturbing the function and form of these molecules.

Reducing the amount of free radicals can be achieved in 2 ways:

1. Prevent their production.

The following increase their production:

  • UVB and UVA radiation – limit sun bathing and factor up
  • Cigarette smoking – quit and see the difference
  • The weather – protect the skin with clothing or essential oils
  • Stress – the 21st century syndrome, ask yourself why and do something about it, its aging you inside and out

2. Supply the “part”

The answer here is antioxidants:

  • Vitamin C and E readily supply the “part” and a diet rich in citrus fruits, peppers, rosehip and wheat germ will hit the spot
  • The rainbow diet, eating 7 colours every day will give an array of nutrients with antioxidant powers.

External support

While the truth is that beauty comes from the inside out it doesn’t harm in any way to treat the skin from the outside, all being you use good essential oils.

Think about this, we absorb approx. 50 – 60 % of what ever we put on our skin, so when choosing a skin cream or oil ask yourself would I eat this product? Cos’ its going to end inside.

Essential oils like marigold, avocado, carrot, lemon and geranium promote collagen production.
